Ferrari SpA will boost fuel economy and cut greenhouse gas emissions in future iterations of its supercars with turbocharging and hybrid technology.
Powertrain Director Vittorio Dini tells Automotive News Europe Ferrari is targeting 3% annual reductions in carbon dioxide emissions that will lower its current CO2 emission average 30% by 2021.
Ferrari has reduced average CO2 emissions from its cars from 435 grams per kilometer in 2007 to about 270 g/km today, according to Dini.
To achieve future reductions, he says, the company will turbocharge its V-8 engines and develop gasoline-electric hybrid systems for its V-12-powered supercars.
Dini notes that the Ferrari's turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8-powered California T sports car makes 552 hp and emits 250 g/km of CO2. That compares with 483 hp and 299 g/km for the previous model's 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8.
