Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says it will drop one of three shifts at its Jeep factory in Belvidere, Ill., in May, eliminating almost 1,400 jobs.
The cutback is intended to align production with global demand for the Jeep Cherokee SUVs produced at Belvidere, according to the company.
The layoffs were revealed yesterday, shortly after FCA announced a $4.5 billion investment blitz in Michigan that includes a new Jeep plant in Detroit. The company says the initiative could create 6,000 jobs.
FCA cautions that the Michigan expansion is contingent upon the company being able within 60 days to gain sufficient state and local incentives and clearances to acquire 200 acres of land.
