Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling 1.6 million vehicles—1.4 million of them in the U.S.—to replace passenger-side front airbag inflators that may explode when triggered by a crash.

The campaign targets these models:

  • 2010 heavy-duty Ram pickup trucks and chassis cabs
  • 2010-2011 Dodge Dakota midsize pickup trucks
  • 2010-2014 Dodge Challenge sport coupes
  • 2011-2015 Dodge Charger sport sedans
  • 2010-2015 Chrysler 300 large sedans
  • 2010-2016 Jeep Wrangler SUVs

The recall is FCA’s final step in a multi-year recall plan organized by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to banish Takata Corp. inflators that can deteriorate over time and then misfire. The program involves 19 carmakers and targets more than 100 million inflators.

The Takata devices have been linked to more than 20 fatalities and hundreds of injuries, but none involving FCA vehicles. The company has previously replaced some 4 million Takata inflators, mainly driver-side units, in the U.S.
