Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV faces a judicial inquiry into suspicions that it obstructed a French inquiry into possible diesel emission cheating, according to media reports. FCA has declined to comment.
The probe stems from tests conducted by France’s consumer fraud agency, DGCCRF, that address the gap between emissions measured in the lab and on the road. The agency evaluated several diesel models made by FCA, PSA, Renault and Volkswagen to determine whether the carmakers deceived consumers.
Le Monde and Reuters say FCA is the only company accused of “aggravated deception” for hindering the tests. DGCCRF targeted the emission performance of Fiat’s 1.3-, 1.6- and 2.0-liter diesels. Those powerplants are Euro 5 and 6 diesels used by FCA’s Alfa-Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Jeep brands.
Le Monde notes that two carmakers, Opel and Mercedes-Benz, were cleared of deception several months ago.
