California-based electric vehicle startup Faraday Future Inc. took the wraps off the production version of its first model, the high-output FF 91 crossover vehicle, last night at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas.

Despite recent cash problems, production concerns and executive departures, the company vows to meet its new goal of launching the FF 91 in early 2018 (the vehicle orignally was due to bow later this year) and has begun taking $5,000 refundable orders. Pricing hasn't been announced.

The vehicle is built on Faraday's Variable Propulsion Architecture, which can be adapted for various types of vehicles. The company also is developing a sedan and sports car.

The FF 91 sits on a 126-inch wheelbase and stretches to nearly 207 inches from bumper to bumper, making it more than a half foot longer than Tesla's Model X electric crossover. The futuristic design features a swept-back windshield, steeply angled rear window and capacitive touch buttons in place of traditional door handles. The rear-hinged doors are equipped with radar sensors that control how far open they'll swing to avoid hitting an object.

Faraday says every aspect of the low-slung vehicle was designed to maximize aerodynamics, which yielded an ultra-low coefficient of drag of just 0.25. The 22-inch wheels automatically change their spokes to a more aerodynamic shape at high speeds.

Inside, the FF 91 has 151 cu-ft of space with seating for four, including ample rear legroom and reclining, executive-style seats. Other features include large touchscreens, LED lighting, a panoramic tinted sunroof and an 802.11 wi-fi network powered by a pair of high-power modems, which the company says allows the vehicle to always have a high-speed data connection that can live stream various content.

As previously announced, the FF 91 will be fitted with three electric motors and a 130-kWh battery pack. Faraday claims the vehicle has a 378 mpg driving range, generates 1,050 hp and 1,330 lb-ft of torque and can zip from zero to 60 mph acceleration in 2.4 seconds.

The vehicle also includes a host of autonomous driving technologies enabled by an array of sensors consisting of 10 cameras, 13 radar units, 12 ultrasonic sensors and one lidar scanner. During a CES demonstration, however, the car's automated parking system didn't work properly.
