Wolfgang Hatz, a former Volkswagen AG engine development chief implicated in VW’s diesel emission cheating, has been release in Germany on €3 million ($3.5 million) bail.
Hatz has been detained since last September after prosecutors claimed he was trying to obstruct their investigation. They say that remains a threat and describe Hatz as a flight risk. Terms of his bail forbid him to leave Germany or contact people involved in the scandal.
The Munich Appeals Court tells Reuters there is “strong” evidence against Hatz. His release on bail comes as suspended Audi CEO Rupert Stadler remains incarcerated in Germany because prosecutors claim he tampered with a witness in their probe into the diesel scandal.
