Uber Technologies Inc. has promoted Nat Beuse to head of safety for the company’s Advanced Technologies Group.

Beuse joined Uber in December as director of self-driving-vehicle standards. In his new role, he replaces Noah Zych, who will become the tech group’s chief of staff.

Beuse is an 11-year veteran of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Most recently he was associate administrator. He helped develop NHTSA’s first nonbinding statement of the agency’s policy toward the testing of self-driving vehicles on public roads.
