Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. is considering a variety of new models, including hybrid and full-electric vehicles, as part of its plans to more than double annual sales to 15,000 units in coming years.
Although there are no immediate plans for an Aston Martin hybrid, CEO Andy Palmer tells Autocar that electrified vehicles are "probably an inevitability" for the British brand. He notes that a high-output hybrid is much more in line with Aston Martin's performance image than switching to a four-cylinder engine to meet future fuel economy requirements.
Palmer hints that Aston Martin could tap into Daimler AG's hybrid technology. Daimler acquired a 5% stake in Aston Martin last year in exchange for supplying the British carmaker with engines and electronic components.
Aston Martin is updating its current lineup with several new models. First up is the DB11, which will replace the DB9 next year. This will be followed by the DBX crossover vehicle by the end of the decade. The first electrified model could come in the form of a 1,000-hp electric version of the Rapide super car, according to media reports.
