European demand for electric vehicles is likely to hit 150,000 units per year by 2020 and could reach 250,000 by then, says LMC Automotive.

LMC expects EV sales in the region will surge 68% to 53,000 units this year. Europe's biggest sellers in the first half of 2014 were the Nissan Leaf (7,100 units), Tesla Model S (5,400), BMW i3 (4,700) and Renault Zoe (3,600), according to JATO Dynamics.

Observers note that the popularity of EVs varies closely with the level of incentives offered to buy them. Many countries, including most in eastern Europe, offer no rebates. Norway, which has become Europe's strongest EV market, gives electric-vehicle buyers as much as €11,500.
