The European Union denies a German media report that its chief trade negotiator plans to meet with her counterparts in Washington, D.C., this week in hopes of averting U.S. tariffs on imported cars.

WirtschaftsWoche says the White House is poised to impose the tariffs as early as next week. But President Donald Trump agreed in July not to make such a move against the EU as long as trade talks are progressing. The talks are expected to resume in January, according to Bloomberg News.

EU negotiator Cecilia Malmstrom last met with U.S trade chief Robert Lighthizer two weeks ago. A spokesman tells Bloomberg that Malmstrom has no plans for further discussions for at least several weeks.

Bloomberg says the Trump administration has been reviewing a Dept. of Commerce draft about possible tariffs for some time. The president would have as long as 90 days to take action after he receives the final report.
