Lisa Jackson, who has headed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency since 2008, has resigned, effective in late January. The White House has not yet announced a successor.

Under Jackson's leadership, the EPA declared carbon dioxide a pollutant under the Clean Air Act and helped push for a 54.5 mpg Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard by 2025.

Both actions raised the ire of Republican politicians, who accused her and the EPA of overstepping their regulatory bounds. Undaunted, Jackson said today she is confident the agency "is sailing in the right direction."

Jackson began at the EPA in 1987 as a scientist. She holds a master's degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University.
