Household electronics specialist Dyson Ltd. has filed for a trademark in Europe that would extend the company’s “digital motor” terminology to include its planned electric vehicle lineup.

Dyson currently uses the digital motor name for technology used in its high-end vacuum cleaner and hand dryers. The name refers to Dyson’s brushless permanent-magnet synchronous motor.

Dyson confirmed its EV program, which has been in the works for three years, last September. The company aims to launch its first model, a high-end electric car, next year.

Production of the first vehicle will be limited to 10,000 units. Dyson plans to use the vehicle to refine its technology—including solid state batteries—and establish relationships with top suppliers in preparation for two mass produced EV that the company aims to launch early next decade.
