Sales new cars in Germany fell 3% to 243,600 units in February, according to ederal motor vehicle authority KBA. Diesel sales plunged 11% to 118,100 units, reducing their share of the total market to 43% from 47% a year earlier.
Demand for diesels throughout Europe has been dropping in the aftermath of the emission cheating scandal that hit Volkswagen AG 17 months ago. VW has acknowledged that it sold 8.5 million vehicles in Europe that were rigged to meet emission tests but then spew much higher pollution in real-world use.
Reuters note that consumers are being deterred by the prospect of more costly emission control systems and the proliferation of city-specific bans on vehicles equipped dirtier older diesels.
