Denso Corp. has opened a factory in Maryville, Tenn., to produce inverters and other components for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
Production at the 335,900-sq-ft facility is due to ramp up next spring. The plant will supply unnamed carmakers in the U.S. with inverters, electronic devices that convert direct current into alternating current.
This will mark the first production applications for Denso's new inverters, which the company says are smaller and more efficient than previous units.
The new plant is part of a $1 billion investment in Tennessee that Denso previously announced. The plan also calls for expanding multiple production lines at Denso’s four existing electronics facilities in Maryville and adding more than 1,000 jobs by 2021. Among the other products Denso produces in Maryville are alternators, instrument clusters and starters.
