Daimler AG is reducing the hourly workforce at its Mercedes-Benz truck plant in Sao Bernardo, Brazil, 13% to help cope with a 44% decline in local demand for commercial vehicles.
Industry trade group ANFAVEA has predicted sales this year of cars and light trucks in Brazil will fall at least 13% to fewer than 2.9 million units after dropping 8% to 3.3 million in 2014.
Daimler said two weeks ago it intended to shed as many as 2,000 jobs at its Sao Bernardo facility because the factory was operating below 60% of capacity.
Earlier this month General Motors Co. said it intended to lay off 800 workers at its Brazilian truck plant in Sao Jose dos Campos. The announcement triggered a two-week strike. The GM walkout ended on Monday when the company agreed to instead put the workers on paid leave for five months. Reuters says GM also agreed it will give the workers an extra layoff payment if their jobs are eliminated next year.
