Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit aims to equip its engine plants to manufacture the company's entire lineup of 6- and 8-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines on the same assembly line.
Mercedes' chief of production and purchasing Andreas Renschler tells a conference in Berlin that the resulting "agile production" system will be able to respond quickly and in small increments to shifts in demand.

The facility, which has capacity to make 250,000 engines annually, is the first outside of Germany to build engines for Mercedes cars.
