Daimler AG says it will be ready to introduce a self-driving Mercedes-Benz car by the end of the decade.
The company showcased its autonomous-driving system in the S 500 Intelligent Drive concept car at the Frankfurt auto show this week.
Most of the technology necessary for self-driving capability will be available in the 2014 Mercedes S-Class, according to Thomas Weber, the Daimler board member who heads Daimler's R&D.
He says the S 500 research vehicle completed a 100-km run in August over rural roads and city streets from Mannheim to Pforzheim with no driver intervention. The route retraced one made 125 years ago by Bertha Benz to demonstrate the long-distance capability of the automobile.
Weber lists three hurdles that must the cleared to open the market to autonomous cars: more on-board computing power, better map data for vehicle orientation and legislation to permit autonomous cars on public roads.
