Consumer Reports has awarded the Tesla Model S electric sedan a chart-busting score of 103 on its 100-point scale. With a zero-to-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, the P85D edition is the fastest car the magazine has ever tested.

Two years ago CR gave the then-new Model S a score of 99, its highest ever. The previous best rating of 96 was set by the Mercedes-Benz S550 large luxury sedan.

CR concedes that, at $127,800, the all-wheel-drive P85D version of the Model S is no mainstream vehicle. It also notes the Model S is still too new to establish a quality rating.

But the magazine gushes at the car's "gee-whiz" innovation, practical 5+2 seating capacity, zippy performance and equivalent fuel economy of 87 mpg (up 3 mpg-e from the first model it tested).
