Continental AG is supplying the power electronics system for Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s all-new I-Pace electric crossover.

The third-generation electronics system also is used in JLR’s Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid SUV. Conti says the scalable architecture is designed to be used in a variety of future JLR electrified vehicles.

The system supplies power to the I-Pace’s electric motors, while controlling energy recuperation during braking. An Inverter turns DC power from the battery to AC power (up to 650 amps) for the motors. In recuperation mode, current is converted back to DC to charge the battery.

Conti says the JLR inverter features a new insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) that uses an industry-first bonding process to improve reliability and durability. Double-sided sintered bonds with direct copper bonded substrates are used in place of solder bonds to improve reliability and durability, according to the supplier.

The I-Pace’s twin electric motors can generate a combined 400 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The 90-KWh battery provides a driving range of about 220 miles.
