Continental AG is reducing the lead in some electronic components used in vehicles sold in the European Union to meet the region’s end-of-life recycling regulations.
Conti has slightly exceeded lead levels set by the EU since 2016. Under the new initiative, the supplier will immediately reduce lead usage in printed circuit board capacitors and other components to meet or exceed the directive.
The amount of allowable lead differs by component and type of vehicle. In June, Conti reported that it was noncompliant by an average of 0.0003 grams per affected component.
Phasing in components that meet the standards will not delay the launch of any new vehicles, according to the supplier. The revised components also are expected have the same performance properties as current parts.
