Amsterdam-based Constellium NV is expanding its research partnership with Brunel University in London to develop and implement next-generation aluminum alloys and corresponding manufacturing processes.

Opened in 2016, the tech center initially focused on aluminum alloy development. Constellium says the program has helped cut development time in half for some traditional products.

Now Constellium will work with university researchers to transfer new production systems to the supplier’s global manufacturing plants. The partners also will focus on advanced alloys, novel extrusions and new applications, including aluminum battery enclosures for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.

The new Brunel Advanced Metals Processing Center’s capabilities include freeform 3D bending, electromagnetic pulse forming, sawing and joining techniques such as welding, flow-drill screws and self-piercing rivets. Constellium also will be able to test and analyze prototype components to confirm they meet customer specifications.

Constellium has 22 global manufacturing facilities. The company generated €5.2 billion ($6.1 billion) in sales last year.
