China’s gross domestic product expanded by an annualized 6.5% in July-September, the lowest quarterly rate in nine years, the National Bureau of Statistics reports.
The country’s economy expanded by 6.7% in the second quarter. China’s central government predicts full-year growth of 6.5%, a target most analysts consider realistic.
Analysts note that China is carrying unusually high debt, leaving policymakers with less room to stimulate the economy if needed. The country continues to focus on the quality rather than quantity of growth.
But analysts also say the accelerating trade war with the U.S. will threaten growth in the current quarter and beyond.
