Sales of hybrid and all-electric vehicles in China jumped 130% to 126,000 units through the first five months of 2016 compared with the same period last year, the China Assn. of Automobile Manufacturers reports.

Electrified cars control less than 2% of Chinese car market, notes the Shanghai Daily. But it says rapid sales growth is extending China’s lead over the U.S. as the world’s biggest market for such vehicles. China moved into the top rank last year, according to the newspaper.

Wang Xia, who chairs the automotive committee of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, tells a conference in Chongqing that Chinese-made electrics have moved beyond “borrowing” core technologies. He says the country’s producers are beginning to develop their own expertise in electrification.
