China's central government may drop current requirements that would-be drivers must first complete driving lessons that can cost about 9,000 yuan ($1,500), Bloomberg News reports.

China's public security ministry says the move would fulfill "the long-awaited wish for independent learning and testing." The ministry is collecting public feedback before deciding if and when to implement the new policy.

Bloomberg notes that easing the licensing process could stimulate car sales in China, which are expected to total about 23 million units in 2014.
