Daimler AG’s car2go car-sharing business says its customer base grew 43% last year to 2.2 million users.
The company operates about 14,000 vehicles worldwide. Customers rented a car2go vehicle more than 22 million times last year, which the company says is a 21% hike over 2015. The utilization rate of the vehicles increased by about 40% from the fourth quarter of 2015 to the end of 2016, according to the firm.
Car2go CEO Olivier Reppert expects growth to continue this year, pointing to plans to enter new markets and add new vehicles to the company's fleet.
Madrid had the biggest customer growth last year with 96,000 new car2go users. But Berlin remains the largest market for the service with 175,000 users—including some 47,000 added in 2016.
Daimler began testing the car2go concept in Germany in 2008. Members have access to vehicles 24 hours a day. They pay by the minute for actual use or can rent a car at discounted rates by the hour or day.
