Canada’s top trade negotiators has joined her counterparts from the U.S. and Mexico in a final bid to revise the North American Free Trade Agreement, perhaps by the end of this week.
The Trump administration has indicated it will move ahead with a bilateral deal with Mexico if Canada balks. Canada and Mexico favor a trilateral agreement, but Canada insists it also needs an agreement that is fair for its own citizens.
All three countries share many of the same trade objectives. But observers note that some issues between the U.S. and Canada were not part of the tentative deal struck this week between the U.S. and Mexico.
They point to proposed changes to mechanisms to resolve trade disputes, intellectual property rights and tariffs that shield Canada’s dairy market. All pose formidable challenges to a quick deal.

When Ford announced its 3rd quarter earning on October 24, the official announcement said, in part, “Company revenue was up 3 percent year over year, with net income and company adjusted EBIT both down year over year, primarily driven by continued challenges in China.” The previous day, perhaps as a preemptive move to answer the question “If things are going poorly in China, what are you doing about it?, Ford announced that it was establishing Ford China as a stand-alone business unit.
