Fourteen of the 35 hydrogen stations for fuel cell vehicles in southern California are either out of service for maintenance or had limited or no fuel this week, reports Tire Meets Road.

At least six stations were reported down for maintenance or repairs, according to the website, which cites The California Fuel Cell Partnership’s station status list. This caused fuel supplies to run short at several other stations because of the limited number of hydrogen pumps in the area.

Fuel stations that carry hydrogen typically have only one such pump, TMR notes. Each pump has enough fuel for about 50 vehicles.

A facility in Ontario, Calif., is expected to be offline for about one month until a new compressor arrives from Japan. Refueling stations must compress lower-pressure hydrogen they receive into medium- or high-pressure storage tanks that are used to dispense the fuel to vehicles.
