General Motors Co. and joint venture partner Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. started building the new Cadillac XTS fullsize sedan this week at an assembly plant in Shanghai.

Cadillac has priced the model between 349,900 yuan ($55,600) and 569,00 yuan ($90,500).

GM projects continuing demand for the brand in China because of the strong appetite of local consumers for luxury goods. Cadillac aims to more than triple its annual sales in the country to at least 100,000 vehicles by 2015.

To do so, the luxury unit has promised to introduce at least one new model per year in China over the next five years. The marque also plans to open 100 additional dealerships in the next two years to expand its Chinese network to 250 outlets.

GM CEO Dan Akerson said last April the company expects to erect a new Chinese factory dedicated to Cadillac production. He offered no details.
