Robert Bosch GmbH is developing a new thermal management system for electric vehicles that the company says can boost driving range by as much as 25% during cold weather operation.

Instead of a conventional battery-driven system that saps an EV's driving range, the Bosch system teams a heat pump with coolant pumps, valves and coolant fluid to capture heat generated by various components and redirect it to the passenger cabin.

A heat pump with an electrical rating of 1,000 watts will generate heat equivalent to an output of 2,000 to 3,000 watts, according to Bosch. It says conventional heaters used in hybrids and electric vehicles are only half as effective.

The system also reduces the need for heating and cooling by repurposing heat generated by the electric motor as well as heat produced during regenerative braking and when cooling the battery.

Bosch likens the EV system to heat pumps that release generated heat into the ambient air. The company says the individual components used in its approach all are commercially available.
