BMW AG says it will begin assembling its upcoming iNext electric car in 2021 at its plant in Dingolfing, Germany.
The new flagship model will be equipped with BMW’s most advanced self-driving capabilities. The so-called Level 3 system will be able to handle full vehicle control under certain conditions, although the driver must be able to take control if requested by the vehicle.
The iNext reportedly will be an SUV/crossover, although BMW showed the vehicle in concept form as a zoomy sedan (pictured) at last year’s Geneva auto show. The new model will be the third for BMW’s electrified “i” sub-brand. The other two cars, the i3 city EV and i8 plugin hybrid sport coupe, are made in Leipzig.
Dingolfing currently builds conventional and hybrid versions of BMW’s 5 Series midsize and 7 Series large cars. BMW says it chose the facility for the iNext because the plant and nearby Landshut powertrain factory form the company’s center of competency for EV batteries and electric propulsion motors.
BMW reiterates its aim to increase its sales of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles 60% to 100,000 units this year and to 15%-25% of its total worldwide sales by 2025.
