The program offers customers by-the-minute access to some 2,400 BMW 1 Series and Mini small cars through its partnership with Germany's Sixt car rental company.
DriveNow currently operates in five cities in Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Munich) and one in the U.S. (San Francisco). BMW tells Bloomberg the service will help it attract new customers, especially first-time buyers.
DriveNow competes with Daimler AG's more established Car2Go service. Since 2008 Car2Go has deployed more than 11,000 Smart ForTwo minicars in more than two dozen cities in Europe, Canada and the U.S.
