BMW AG is spending €54 million to raise its assembly capacity in India from 11,000 cars to 14,000 units by year-end.

The company's factory in Chennai currently assembles seven models: 1, 3, 5 and 7 Series coupes and sedans, X1 and X3 crossovers and the Mini Countryman supermini. The company sold 9,400 cars in India last year.

BMW says the 5 Series sedan currently accounts for about one-third of its sales in India. The company tells reporters it expects to increase its dealer network in India from 36 outlets to 50 by the end of 2014.
