BMW AG says it will introduce a car by 2021 that can drive itself autonomously in virtually any situation that could be managed by a human driver, Reuters reports.
The so-called Level 5 capability is the most advanced form of self-driving technologies. Today’s cars vary between Level 0 (no automation of any kind) and Level 3 (conditional automation, in which the car can operate autonomously under some conditions but requires a human driver who is able to take control at any moment).
Elmar Frickenstein, BMW’s vice president for autonomous driving, tells a conference in Berlin that the unidentified vehicle will work at automation levels 3-5, depending on how and where it is used.
