BMW Partners with EVCard on Car-Sharing Service in China

BMW AG and Shanghai-based Global Car Sharing & Rental Co. (EVCard) have launched a car-share service in Chengdu, China.

Called ReachNow, the station-based business charges customers 2 yuan (30 cents) per minute for access to a BMW i3 electric city car. Users employ an EVCard smartphone app to make a reservation, handle pickup and drop off, lock and unlock the vehicle and make payments.

The partners expect to have 100 cars deployed at 25 pickup and drop off stations in Chengdu by the end of 2017. Facilities are being located in high-end residential and commercial areas, luxury hotels, government compounds and large office buildings.

BMW has been partnering with rental company Sixt on a car-share service in Europe, DriveNow, for six years. The carmaker also introduced a similar service in the U.S. in 2016 under its ReachNow brand.
