BMW AG hopes to sell 100,000 hybrid and all-electric vehicles in 2017, up from 60,000 units this year, CEO Harald Krueger tells Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

The company said last week it has sold about 100,000 electrified vehicles since 2013. Krueger declares that electrification is coming, even though current demand is tepid. Like several rivals, BMW predicts that hybrids and EVs will account for 15%-25% of its total sales volume by 2025.

BMW announced in May that its only all-electric model, the i3 city car, will get a 50% larger battery for 2017 that will increase driving range 41% to 180 km (114 miles) per charge. The extended-range variant of the car, which adds a piston-powered electric generator, will add 150 km (93 miles) of capability.
