BMW AG confirms it will use factories in China to supply its all-electric iX3 small crossover vehicle to global markets.
The new model will debut in 2020. Analysts predict the primary export market for the iX3 initially will be Europe, according to the Nikkei. The newspaper notes that BMW produces conventional piston-powered X3 crossovers in China, South Africa and the U.S.
BMW won approval from the Chinese central government in January for a €3.6 billion ($4 billion) investment to raise its stake in an EV-making venture with Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings from 50% to 75%. Two plants operated by the venture in Shenyang will be the global supply base for the iX3. Those factories are expected to initially build a combined 20,000 EVs per year.
Separately, BMW plans to make electric versions of its Mini small cars in China through a 50:50 joint venture with Great Wall Motor Co. That initiative also targets initial output of 20,000 EVs annually, including models for export.
