Audi AG has been charged with illegally deceiving customers in Australia by touting the low emissions of diesel-powered vehicles that had been rigged to mask high pollution levels.
The lawsuit by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission charges that Audi knowingly misled buyers of more than 12,000 vehicles with false or misleading descriptions, Reuters reports. The commission made similar claims about Volkswagen-brand diesel vehicles in a lawsuit filed last year.
The agency asks for Audi to publicly acknowledge its deception, pay unspecified fines and run corrective ads.
