Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit is pilot testing its new “shared fleet” program at the American Underground technology incubator campus in Durham, N.C., ahead of next year’s planned national rollout for the car-sharing service.

The test fleet will include three well-equipped A4 sedans. Participants will be able to book a vehicle and unlock it via a smartphone.

The program will be supported by a 24-hour call center. Audi plans to incorporate user feedback to refine the service before launch.

The 115,000-sq-ft American Underground technology park houses more than 250 companies with a combined 700 employees. Audi describes the group, which includes tech-related entrepreneurs and developers for smartphone apps, as “ideal users” to help shape the program.
