Audi AG says it will begin assembling its first electric-only crossover vehicle at its factory in Brussels in 2018.
The facility, which currently makes the piston-powered A1 city car, also will build batteries for the new model and other EVs for parent Volkswagen AG. Audi plans to relocate A1 production to Martorell, Spain.
Audi says the electric SUV, expected to be a direct competitor to Tesla Motors Inc.’s new Model X crossover, will have a range of about 500 km (310 miles) per charge.
The company showed the new EV in concept form during the Frankfurt auto show in September. Audi says the production model will deliver sporty performance with the help of three electric motors and a high-capacity battery with quick-charge capability.
