Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit may be forced to recall 60,000 large diesel-powered sedans worldwide because of software that could compromise their emission control system, according to Der Spiegel.
The magazine cites the Germany transport ministry and KBA, the country’s motor authority. The targeted vehicles are 60,000 A6 and A7 models equipped with V-6 engines. Half the cars are in Germany.
Audi said earlier today it had discovered an unspecified emissions-related problem with 50,000 of its A6 and A7 cars, without providing details. A source tells Reuters the cars will be recalled for a software update.
At issue is software that regulates a device that treats emissions by injecting liquid urea into the exhaust stream. Regulators say the software may allow excess pollution by lowering the amount of liquid used for the sake of extending the range between urea tank fill-ups. Regulators are determining whether the system is illegal.
Der Spiegel says Audi has suspended A6 production until the issue is resolved.
