Audi AG plans to eventually add an electric version of the next-generation Q5 crossover it will begin building in Mexico this autumn, sources tell Reuters.
The $1.3 billion assembly plant in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico, is expected to begin operations at the end of September. The facility, which will be Audi’s first in Mexico, is slated to become the company’s only source for the redesigned Q5. The plant reportedly will have annual capacity to make 150,000 vehicles.
Audi already is training workers to build the electric model, according to Reuters’ sources. But they say the company has not chosen an introduction date for the car.
Last year Audi unveiled a sporty four-seat electric crossover concept (pictured) and said the all-wheel-drive model would go into production in 2018. The concept EV features three electric motors and a lithium-ion battery large enough to deliver a 500-km (311-mile) range.
