Audi AG is developing a top-end electric sedan that it plans to launch by 2020.
The vehicle, tentatively called the A9 e-tron, will be positioned above the current A8 sedan and use the same electric drivetrain as the brand’s upcoming Q6 e-tron crossover vehicle, company officials tell Autocar. The system includes three asynchronous motors, which Audi says are more efficient than current synchronous motors, and a 95-kWh battery mounted below the passenger floor.
Audi says the three-motor system will provide all-wheel-drive and torque vectoring capability. The Q6 e-tron is expected to have a 500-km (310-mile) driving range.
In addition to the Q6 and A9 electric models, Audi has said it will introduce another unspecified EV by 2020. The company expects one-fourth of its lineup to be EVs or plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2025.
