Audi AG’s upcoming e-tron electric crossover vehicle will offer camera systems in place of traditional exterior side mirrors in select markets.

Images from the driver-side camera will be sent to a display screen between the door and the instrument panel. Audi hasn’t said where the passenger-side images will be displayed. Drivers can choose among three settings that optimize views for normal driving, turns and parking maneuvers.

The video cameras will be mounted at the base of the front windows, where rearview mirrors typically are located. The cameras are nearly 6 inches narrower than the mirrors, which Audi says will significantly improve vehicle aerodynamics. Other benefits are wider view angles and reduced wind noise.

The e-tron has a coefficient of drag of 0.28 and an estimated driving range of 248 miles on the world harmonized light vehicle test cycle. Every .01 increase in a vehicle’s coefficient of drag reduces range by 5 km (3 miles), according to Audi.

A production version of the e-tron is expected to be unveiled in August. Sales in Europe are due to start by year-end. Deliveries will start next year in the U.S. but won’t include the optional rearview camera displays, because regulations require rearview mirrors.
