Volkswagen AG's Audi unit won't decide whether to erect an assembly plant in Brazil until the government there clarifies its definition of a locally made vehicle, according to the brand's CEO Rupert Stadler.
He tells reporters that the company has the necessary government approvals to build a factory in Brazil if it chooses to do so. Audi officials say they still hope to make a decision by year-end, as planned.
The luxury unit complained in December that the 30% tariff on imported autos that Sao Paulo imposed in September caused it to fall short of its goal of selling 5,700 vehicles there last year.
