Apple Inc. has urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration not to hamper self-driving cars by imposing too many restrictions on testing.
In a five-page letter to the agency, Apple acknowledges it has strong interest in automation and machine learning and how those technologies will apply to transportation and other areas, Reuters reports. The company urges NHTSA to treat established carmakers and newcomers equally.
Apple also points to the importance of software in the future of connected and autonomous vehicles. It notes that software will drive the decision-making that such cars must make to operate safely, ensure privacy, defend security and address legal issues.
Apple has not publicly acknowledged its level of interest in self-driving cars. Media reports have indicated the company assembled a team to develop its own electric autonomous car but has shifted focus to the software involved in controlling such vehicles.
