Employers in the U.S. who added 154,000 jobs from February to March increased their workforces by only 115,000 jobs in April, the Dept. of Labor reports.
Last month's gain was the smallest in six months. The private sector added 130,000 jobs in April, but governments shed 15,000 employees.
The unemployment rate eased to 8.1% from 8.2% in March, but mainly because 342,000 fewer people were looking for jobs.
Economists say the warm winter prompted some employers to hire workers earlier in the year than usual. The Labor Dept. increased its estimates of job growth in February and March by a combined 53,000 jobs. Over the first four months of 2012, employment rose by an average of about 200,000 jobs per month.
