Japan’s Aisin AW is rolling out three new transmissions: an 8-speed automatic for front-drive applications, a 10-speed rear-drive automatic and a “multi-stage” 8-speed unit for rwd hybrid vehicles.
Touted as an industry first, the rwd 8-speed multi-stage system teams a step automatic transmission with a dual-electric motor hybrid transmission. Aisin says the design enhances acceleration and fuel efficiency, especially at highway speeds, by allowing the engine to be engaged intermittently as needed.
The new 8-speed fwd automatic is an evolution of Aisin’s conventional 8-speed. Aisin says it redesigned the geartrain structure, used lightweight materials and optimized shapes to provide “significant” fuel economy improvements.
Aisin claims the new 10-speed has the fastest shift time in the industry, thanks in part to its wide gear ratio. The gearbox was developed to maximize driving performance and comfort, attributes Aisin notes are particularly important for drivers of rwd vehicles.
