Yes, there is such a thing as a viable battery powered truck. Electronic Vehicles International (EVI) has been working on the technology since 1989, making a variety of electric vehicles in their Toluca, Mexico facility.
Soon these trucks will be made in the US at the company's new HQ in Stockton, California. Says CEO Ricky Hanna, "This is the time for us to make the move into the world's single biggest market for electric commercial vehicles." Hanna sees the operation employing more than 100 people by the end of 2010.
The lean operation is possible because EVI marries their proprietary power train technology with industry standard chassis and cabs. They can do conversions as well as their own eviLightTruck. The 330V or 450V motors can generate max power from 174 to 240hp, and speeds up to 60 mph. Range is a funtion of the lithium phosphate or lead acid battery, and a hybrid option is also available.
