This autumn the U.S. announced new guidelines for autonomous-car developers that set a framework without dictating one technology over another, notes Jennifer Dukarski, an attorney with Detroit-area law firm Butzel Long.

She says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has signaled that more detailed regulations may lie ahead. But the agency also hints that makers of self-driving cars could be required to go through a pre-clearance or self-certification process akin to that required for aircraft builders.
