SAE International coordinates the work of some 500 committees and 8,000 industry experts to set automotive technical standards, including those for self-driving cars.
Their focus in the world of autonomous vehicles is exclusively on rules that enable the necessary technology, notes Jack Pokryzywa, SAE’s director of Global Ground Vehicle Standards.
Some elements of rulemaking for autonomous vehicles exist now at the local and regional level, Pokryzywa says. The first of the SAE standards developed specifically for self-driving cars—which describes how they will communicate with each other and the infrastructure—is expected soon.
